Spectrum Autism Support Group, established in 1998, actively tackles disparities in the African American community by focusing on autism awareness and resources. The organization, founded by Rochelle Geiman (Stone) and Claire Dees, has evolved into a vital support network, serving over 1,500 families. Spectrum's mission includes providing support, education, and resources for individuals and families impacted by autism.
Through dedicated fundraising, grant writing, and donations, Spectrum has expanded its services. The organization offers innovative programs such as Adelante Autismo, a Spanish language support group, and various support groups for Dads, siblings, grandparents, parents of adults with autism, and individuals on the autism spectrum. Annual family events and specialized programs, including social skills groups, day and overnight camps, and respite programs, create a fun and safe environment addressing the diverse needs of those on the autism spectrum.
Spectrum also plays a crucial role in guiding families toward organizations that can assist with autism diagnosis. Over the years, the organization has received recognition, including the Dove Award, for its impactful contributions to the autism community. Today, with 1 in 36 children diagnosed with autism, Spectrum Autism Support Group continues to grow and emphasize not just awareness but acceptance, making a daily difference for families and communities affected by autism.
